Evacuation
Evacuation plan for University of Copenhagen
The management of the University of Copenhagen has decided to apply the same basic evacuation concept for all University of Copenhagen buildings. The evacuation plan is part of the University of Copenhagen’s overall Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan.
The University of Copenhagen’s evacuation plan is the biggest in Denmark, covering 30,000 rooms and 1 million square metres.
Keep an eye on the evacuation stations on the walls. The evacuation stations contain instructions on evacuation procedures in Danish and English. Regular evacuation drills are held. Ask your local occupational health and safety group how you should conduct yourself.
Evacuation plan at LIFE
LIFE’s buildings and facilities are divided into evacuation areas of a size which means that all rooms can be evacuated within a short space of time. Each evacuation area has a so-called evacuation station in a central location, which is a Perspex holder containing two coloured vests (yellow and orange) and a set of instructions.
The concept is based on two defined roles which are essentially the same throughout LIFE:
- The evacuation manager, wearing the yellow vest, makes sure that everybody within his or her evacuation area has been notified of the evacuation and that all rooms have been gone through systematically.
- The assembly point manager, wearing the orange vest, immediately goes to the assembly point to make sure that everybody remains calm and keeps the evacuees together.
The instructions at the evacuation station describes the roles and duties of the evacuation and assembly point managers, the location of the nearest assembly point, the area covered by the station and any special conditions. The instructions are prepared in consultation with local employees.
The instructions are available in both Danish and English.
Evacuation drills must be held annually at all LIFE departments. The aim is that the evacuation concept should be known by all employees so that anybody can assume either of the two roles at any time. The idea is also to ensure local awareness of the procedures by having local employees present the evacuation plans locally, possibly at group meetings or departmental meetings.
