Students express fears about future chemistry education

In connection with the proposed merger between the three faculties, SCIENCE, LIFE and PHARMA in the field of chemistry, the student at LIFE and SCIENCE are concerned about the focus on the educational aspects of the process.

The students wish to be involved and to take active part in the hearing process. In an open letter to the management of University of Copenhagen, they stress the importance of the teachers having local affiliation, and concern is expressed about students who will be going from LIFE to the Faculty of Science (SCIENCE) for their chemistry lectures.

The students see this as a matter of great concern as many chemistry courses are placed during the first year of study, and it will create much frustration and deteriorate their affiliation to LIFE if they are to go to SCIENCE for lectures.

A group has been set up consisting of representatives of the student unions at SCIENCE and LIFE, student representatives from relevant teaching committees and the University student council. The aim of the group is to ensure that educational aspects take top priority. The group has also written the open letter to the University management.

In the letter the students, among other things, write:

»As it is now, the faculties of Pharma, Science and Life Sciences each have departments with chemistry. We take it for granted that the teachers are better at their own faculty subject areas than in a subject area across all the faculties. A chemistry teacher at the Faculty of Life Sciences will always know the LiIFE students and their subject better than, say, a chemistry teacher at Pharma,«

The open letter be read here (in Danish).
