One of this year's final news mail. This time please notice specially the HTF announced call for expression of interest coupled to an opportunity to talk to the foundation at a joint LIFE and SCIENCE information meeting here at LIFE.

EU
ERC Advanced Grant in Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities and Physics and Engineering - experienced research leaders
Eligible researchers must be established and have made exceptional contributions to research, both in terms of originality and significance. The researcher must furthermore have produced a number of excellent and important research results within the last 10 years.
All researchers, regardless of nationality and country of residence may apply. No age requirement.
It is a condition that the applicants are working or have been offered a position in a host organization, which is located in the EU or an associated country, at least during the period covered by the ERC grant. The host organization may be a public institution, such as a university, or a private company.
Applications must be submitted as a "Full Proposal" ie. a complete application in one step. An Advanced Investigators Grant is up to 2.5 million euro or in special cases up to 3.5 million euro. Grant running time is up to 5 years. Typically 300 scholarships will be granted each year.

Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP)
There are 80 million euros for this posting. Applicants may apply for support for research in all areas as long as the project is implemented in a partnership between public research institutions and private commercial enterprises.
Support is given primarily to exchange / secondment of staff for research, but it is also to a lesser extent possible to recruit external senior researchers for knowledge transfer and / or training of researchers.
All public research institutions and private commercial enterprises carrying out research can participate.
The project consortium must consist of at least 2 independent units from different EU countries and / or associated countries. Other participants from around the world may participate. Participants from ICPC countries can apply for funding

National funding
DFF – Independent Research Council: Information meeting about call 2012
The DFF secretariat organizes information meetings around Denmark about the administrative procedures for the 2012 call. All interested are welcome at the meetings, which are addressed to both applicants and administrative staff.
The meeting at UCP is on 14 December 2011, 10-12.

HTF – Advanced Technology Foundation
The foundation has just opened for investment in new high-tech projects and platforms.
High-tech projects
· should move the participating companies into new business areas where they build on existing strengths o raid in developing a next generation technology
High-tech platforms
· are located at the high end of the risk scale - with correspondingly high potential for value creation and should serve as a springboard for future commercial activities

HTF information meeting at LIFE 12 December 2011, 10:00-12:00, H60 LIFE central library
LIFE and Science invite you to an information meeting about the next HTF call incl. HTF post doc. Head of Communication and a project officer from the foundation will be presenting at the meeting. Furthermore, Mogens Steffensen from Science will tell us about his preparation for the successfully funded ACTULUS– financial IT project.

Novo Nordisk foundation – life sciences exploratory pre-seed programme
A stimulus fund established to accelerate commercialization of biomedical research findings and development of novel technologies and diagnostics in the life science area. Thus the programme seeks to support application-oriented research and stimulate entrepreneurship by funding projects at a very early (pre-seed) stage.
Faculty members, researchers and students based at universities, hospitals and other knowledge institutions in the Nordic countries are eligible. Grants can support activities costing from DKK 100,000 to 500,000 during a grant period of 4-12 months. Exploratory pre-seed grants may fund research and personnel, as well as commercialization-related costs. Funding is not available for conferences and travel expenses.
Deadline for application is 19 December 2011, 16:00.

International funding and prizes
Alzheimer’s Association
The Association supports projects that will:
• lead to increased understanding of Alzheimer's
• help identify new treatment options
• generate knowledge that can improve care for patients with dementia
• provide knowledge about the brain and disease prevention
The general theme is Alzheimer's, but also both neurological and preclinical research is accepted. Grant size is between DKK 428,000 and 1 million and spans up to 3 years. Well established researchers are given priority, but there are also grants specifically for young researchers. Several Danish researchers have previously received support from the Alzheimer's Association.
The call is open for expressions of interest from 15 November until 20 December 2011. If you are invited to submit a full application, this must be submitted before 7 February 2012.

Precall announcement: NOS-Humanities and Social Sciences, NORDCORP
The Nordic cooperative boards for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS) NOS-HS expects to publish a notice of NORdic COllaborative Research Projects in late November 2011.
Application deadline is 15 February 2012.
There will be an opportunity to apply for a maximum of 4 million NOK for a period of 3-4 years with project start from 2013. At least 3 researchers from different Nordic countries must be included in the project collaboration. The call will be available on www.fi.dk in late November 2011 where we will return with more information.

Dan David Prize 2012 – Genome research
3 prizes of US$ 1 million each are annually awarded for achievements having an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social impact on our world. Each year fields are chosen within the 3 time dimensions - Past, Present and Future.

King Faisal’s International Prize – Medicine Prize: The genetics of obesity
LIFE has the possibility to nominate candidates. Nominated papers must be published, must benefit mankind and enrich human knowledge.
The prize is composed of a certificate, a gold medallion and US$ 200,000. Deadline is 1 May 2012 and winners will be announced January 2013.
Internal LIFE deadline is 19 March 2012.

Harvey Prize – prizes in Human Health and Science & Technology
Nominators may propose candidates from all over the world regardless of sex, nationality and age. Candidates must be outstanding personalities in one of the two fields and their achievements must serve as an inspiration to many others. The prize recognizes primarily recent breakthroughs.
Self nominations are not allowed. Nominations should be made in the name of individuals, and not of institutions or organizations. Nominators are requested not to inform the proposed candidates.
