LIFE and SCIENCE merge at the turn of the year

The University of Copenhagen Board has decided to ask Rector and the Deans to draw up a plan to simplify the structure of the so-called “wet” faculties: Faculty of Science (SCIENCE), Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PHARMA) and Faculty of Health Sciences (HEALTH).

New faculties
PHARMA, LIFE, SCIENCE and HEALTH should merge to form two faculties and the departmental structure should be simpler. This is the mandate the University Board has given Rector and the Deans of the four “wet” faculties.

Rector must submit a proposal for a new faculty structure in November. A broad hearing will then be carried out at the affected faculties and in the General Collaboration Committee. This includes the Faculty Collaboration Committees, the Academic Councils, the study boards and the local collaboration committees.

See the proposed new departmental structure (present departments to the left, proposed structure to the right). (It is as yet undecided to which faculty two or three veterinary departments/a School of Veterinary Medicine will belong.)

Monitoring groups

The University Board has set up a monitoring group which will follow the process closely. The General Collaboration Committee (HSU) will also set up a monitoring group whose members will come from management as well as from staff. The HSU monitoring group will follow the process with a special focus on staff-related consequences.

Timetable

Rector will present the final plan at a Board meeting in December 2011.

If the Board adopts the plan, the new management structure and organisation will be in place as from 1 January 2012 and 2012 will be a year of transition and integration. The new structure will be fully implemented on 1 January 2013.
