Responsibilities for the PhD student and supervisor

The principal supervisor
The principal supervisor must be employed at the Faculty of Science, and must conduct research as a senior researcher, assistant professor or professor within the subject studied by the PhD student. The principal supervisor must be familiar with the PhD programmes and contents, requirements and procedures during these programmes.
The principal supervisor must:
- Offer regular supervision to the PhD student.
- Prepare and maintain a PhD plan in collaboration with the PhD student. The principal supervisor is responsible for submitting the plan to the Graduate School no later than three months after admission.
- Ensure that the PhD student is a part of a good research community, and introduce the PhD student to active researchers in related research networks, preferably networks including foreign researchers.
- Ensure that the PhD student has the opportunity to establish contacts with active researchers outside the University of Copenhagen.
- Prepare half-yearly assessment in collaboration with the PhD student (F12). The principal supervisor is responsible for submitting the report to Study and Students’ Affairs via the department by 1 March and 1 September, pending approval from the local PhD coordinator.
- Propose an assessment committee no later than two months before the expected PhD thesis submission date.
- Prepare a detailed statement of the PhD studies (the official opinion on the PhD studies), submitted in connection with the last half-yearly assessment or no later than the submission of the PhD thesis. The principle supervisor is responsible for submitting the statement to the Graduate School (F13).
The PhD student
The PhD student carries the prime responsiblility for the PhD project, and must ensure – in collaboration with the principal supervisor - that the PhD plan is followed or adjusted accordingly.
The PhD student must:
- Work on the PhD project and ensure that the project and studies meet the general requirements– in collaboration with the principal supervisor . The PhD student is entitled to competent supervision by the supervisor(s) throughout the PhD studies.
- Prepare a PhD plan in collaboration with the principal supervisor.
- Prepare half-yearly assessments in collaboration with the principal supervisor; however, the supervisor is responsible for submission.
- Submit a PhD thesis (satisfying the thesis requirements) as a conclusion of the PhD studies.
- Defend the PhD thesis
