World-class food research - 08.09.2009
International panel ranks Danish food research among the best in the world
An international panel of 13 reputable researchers praises the Danish food universities, including LIFE- Faculty of Life Sciences at University of Copenhagen, for the development which Danish food research has undergone over the past 15 years. From small, dispersed research units, Danish food research has developed into a single, cooperative unit, with research skills that inspire both European and global food research.
The Evaluation Panel, which is chaired by director Einar Risvik from Nofima Foods in Norway, in October last year conducted a comprehensive evaluation of 31 research groups at the Centre for Advanced Food Studies which includes teams from the Danish food universities; LIFE - Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, DTU, University of Southern Denmark and Aarhus University. Based on the results, the evaluators praise the Centre for being internationally visible and for the great respect in which it is held both inside and outside Europe, thanks to its world-class research capabilities.
Sharing knowledge means better food
The Panel also welcomes the fact that the Danish for Advanced Food Studies now includes all Danish food researchers which makes it possible for them to share knowledge, to cooperate and set the agenda for strategic food research both politically and in the public sphere. Food manufacturers now have improved access to information and that means better food.
At Department of Food Science, head of department Lars Nørgaard is happy for the positive assessment of the department’s research groups, "The Centre for Advanced Food Studies has a unique function of bringing together the Danish research groups within food. In many other countries small research groups are competing fiercely with each other instead of cooperating for the benefit of consumers and the food industry”.
