Internationalisation award to Associate Professor Bjarne Strobel - 01.12.2010

Associate Professor Bjarne W. Strobel, Department of Basic Sciences and Environment, and the group behind the international MSc programme EnvEuro (European MSc in ”Environmental Science: Soil, Water and Biodiversity) have been given the Danish Business Research Academy, DEA’s, Internationalisation Award for their special efforts to internationalise education.

Bjarne Strobel

Bjarne Strobel and his group have spearheaded the development and implementation of the very successful international MSc programme “EnvEuro” (European MSc in ”Environmental Science: Soil, Water and Biodiversity), a partnership between universities in Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Germany. They have developed an online platform for students across countries and a number of joint summer courses with an international excursion.

Bjarne Strobel and EnvEuro use innovative approaches to e-learning, for instance the development of an eCampus and field studies supported by ICT. This is indeed e-learning version 2.0 and makes Bjarne Strobel and EnvEuro first movers in the field.

According to the jury, the award is given to Bjarne Strobel because “by working actively with e-learning and using virtual space and tools, Bjarne Strobel and EnvEuro set new standard for internationalisation. The initiatives challenge the traditional thinking that students must necessarily move abroad and into the world to take part in internationalisation”.

Important inspiration to LIFE and the entire University

In their many different activities, Bjarne Strobel and EnvEuro serve as a guiding star to the many possibilities presented by e-learning in internationalisation. The jury hopes that the experiences gained may shine bright and be an inspiration to others.

Bjarne Strobel and his group have been a beacon to LIFE - Faculty of Life Sciences. Their work has been of decisive importance to the internationalisation and e-learning strategy of the entire Faculty and has meant that today LIFE has eight international MSc programmes, in addition to the 13 LIFE MSc programmes taught in English, and welcomes MSc students and exchange students from more than 40 countries.

The award was presented by Minister for Science and Technology Charlotte Sahl-Madsen at an award ceremony on 24 November 2010 and is accompanied by DKK 100,000.
