Private Accommodation
Please note that private housing via the Housing Department is not an option during the Spring Semester.
During the fall semester, however, student housing in Copehagen can be very hard to find. Thus, many Danish students choose to rent a room in someone else’s flat or house with access to kitchen and bathroom facilities.
Private Accommodation is a broad term and can be many things, but it is not a homestay. You will maintain your independence, yet at the same time get a chance to experience how Danes live their everyday lives.
Options
It is difficult to give an accurate description of Private Accommodation since there are as many versions as there are rooms available. Some rooms are small, some are large and your landlord may be a student, a senior citizen or somewhere in between…
Sometimes private accommodation can mean a small one- or two-bedroom flat (in this case the price may not reflect the below range), but most often it will be a room in someone’s home, be it an apartment or a house.
However, we can guarantee you a room with a bed, a desk, a dresser/closet for your clothes and, of course, access to kitchen and bathroom. The price of the room will reflect the facilities to which you have access.
Is private accommodation right for me?
When trying to decide if Private Accommodation is right for you, keep in mind that this is a great way to experience the Danish lifestyle (or at least one version of it)!
You should, however, also consider that you will be renting a room in someone’s private home with access to kitchen and bathroom; this means that you must be prepared to accept certain house rules that your landlord may have and to respect his or her personal property.
We know that most of our sub-letters are interested in sharing their culture as well as learning about yours, but some like to keep to themselves and do not expect to socialize very much.
Private Accommodation is a good choice if you would like a good study environment at home.
If you consider Private Accommodation, it is a good idea to write a few words about your preferences to the Housing Department and enclose it with the “Application Form for Accommodation” (for example, if you would like to live with a student or a mature adult, if you would like a great deal of interaction, or mainly wish to keep to yourself). This will give us an opportunity to find the best possible solution for you.
Please note that a successful stay in private accommodation requires you to be open and flexible. It is important that you ask your landlord about house rules and keep an open line of communication at all times.
Price range: DKK 2000-3500 per month depending on the size of the room and location of the tenancy among other. Utilities are (in most cases) included and you should expect to pay one month's rent as a deposit.
Please note: Prices may be subject to change. More information will follow with your tenancy agreement.
