Overseas Application procedures for studying abroad
1. How do I apply?
Overseas (outside Europe)
Exchange and Internationalisation Scholarship
The University of Copenhagen has more than 100 exchange agreements with overseas universities in over 30 countries around the world. In addition to these partners, LIFE has several exchange agreements specific to its own subject areas. Most notably, the faculty has agreements with Cornell University and Purdue University in the USA as well as Lincoln University in New Zealand.
When you apply for an overseas study abroad place you automatically also apply for an Internationalisation Scholarship.
Stage 1 – Preparing your application
- Check which partners LIFE has by using our interactive globe here in order to find a university within your academic field and in the country where you wish to study. You can also check the list of the University of Copenhagen’s overseas exchange partners (In Danish). You should also be able visit the partner university's website and find courses you might be interested in.
For more information about finding study abroad destinations and advice about the application process you may wish to consider the following options:
1. Check the information provided by the Central International Office for an introduction to studying overseas and to get an overview of the application process.
2. Check LIFE’s Study Abroad website for further information regarding your opportunities to study overseas as a LIFE student.
3. Contact academic members of staff from your programme at LIFE to see if they can recommend specific partners that are particularly strong within the field of study you wish to pursue whilst studying overseas.
4. Contact Student Services for guidance. For example, it is possible to read study abroad evaluations from LIFE students who have previously been on exchange at overseas partners at the Student Services office. You can also receive guidance about when it is possible to study abroad as part of your degree.
5. Contact the Secretariat for International at LIFE for further practical assistance when you have a concrete idea as to where you would like to study and specific questions relating to your application.
Stage 2 - Submitting your application
- You submit your exchange and Internationalisation Scholarship application through KUnet. Read further information about the application procedure here.
- Deadlines:
There is an annual application deadline approximately the 1st of October. The deadline for overseas exchange applications during the academic year 2012/2013 is the 1st of October 2012 at 15:00.
- The application window in KUnet is open from approximately the 1st of August 2012.
Stage 3 - After submitting your initial application
- When you have submitted your application, all communication between you and the Central International Office will take place through your KU (alumni) email. Therefore, it is very important that you check your KU email account regularly.
- You will be notified of whether your application has been successful or not in late December. If your application has been successful, you will be invited to an information meeting where you will be informed of the application process to the partner institution for which you have been nominated. However if you have applied using a LIFE specific agreement then you will be invited to the Secretariat for Internationalisation individually for advice about the application process.
- Please note that it is possible for students to be awarded a study abroad place but not an Internationalisation Scholarship. However, LIFE has set aside funds for its own students who find themselves in this situation. As such, it is still possible to receive funding for your study abroad period even if you are not awarded an Internationalisation Scholarship. If this is the case you will be contacted directly by the Secretariat for Internationalisation.
- Being awarded a scholarship and place at an overseas partner university does not mean you are guaranteed admission to the relevant institution. You still have to apply for admission to the partner university.
- Please be aware that the University of Copenhagen and LIFE are only able to nominate you. The partner institution makes the final decision regarding your admission. You must therefore expect to use a reasonable amount of time in January and February preparing your exchange application to the partner institution.
- If you need further assistance during the second stage of the application process please contact the at the Secretariat for Internationalisation if you have been nominated to one of LIFE’s partners. Students using non-LIFE specific agreements should contact the Central International Office for further assistance.
