Health and insurance

Health and insurance

The Danish National Health Service

When living in Denmark, you are covered by the Danish National Health Service. This means that visits to the doctor and hospitalisation is free. Dental work and eye doctors is partially subsidised, meaning that you have to pay part of the fee yourself.

Procedures vary depending on where you come from:

Students from countries outside the European Union

You are covered by the Danish National Health Service after a period of 6 weeks counting from the day you have registered with the municipality.

This means that you are not covered for the first 6 weeks of your stay, and therfore it is important that you have private medical insurance covering the first 6 weeks of your stay.

Students from EU countries

You are covered by the Danish National Health Service after a period of 6 weeks counting from the day you have registered with the municipality.

If you obtain a European Health Insurance Card in your home country you will have 3 months of medical coverage 8from the date of the application).

Nordic citizens

You are covered by the Danish National Health Service immediately.

Insurance for Repatriation

Please note that the Danish National Health coverage does not cover the costs of medical repatriation, which would be neccessary if you were involved in an accident and wanted to spend a period of prolonged recovery at home.

Liability, accident and theft

It is recommended that international students take out liability insurance as well as insurance against accidents and theft. it is especially recommended that you check the coverage in case of accidents during practical exercises and other activities related to your studies.
