Carbon storage in soil and biomass
Soil and biomass sequestration of carbon in agriculture and forestry may provide offsets for fossil fuel emissions.
The main scientific objectives are:
- To understand the chemical, physical and microbial community processes of the soil carbon pools, carbon storage and emissions of nitrous oxides and methane.
- To predict using models, potentials for the sequestration of carbon into managed and natural biological systems at various scales.
The mitigation studies are expected to open significant perspectives for studies of sequestration in soils and plants and the modelling and GIS representation of mitigation possibilities as influenced by agricultural and forestry management.
